Where did September go? This new fiscal year has started off with a bang with 30 events.
We had the IBCA added money event in Silverton, TX at the Briscoe County Cook-off. Wylie and his group did a great job with this event. The weather apparently scared some of the teams as there was a 80% chance of rain all week-end but we lucked out and had only a shower. Dana & her crew did a great job of overseeing the judging. The Beef Short Ribs for the invitational were interesting. Congrats to all that had their name called.
The BOD voted to accept the application for a new PIT in the Rio Grande Valley – it will be called Southern Smoke BBQ Assn. Those members that had paid their dues into the RGBA Pit will be required to pay $10.00 to be part of the new organization if they are interested in supporting both groups.
TOP COOK: Please be patient as we are working to make sure that the current membership list is correct – so there will be some moving around as we work through this process. Hopefully by the middle of October we will have everything worked out and the list will be correct. If you noticed that your name isn’t listed – please check the event to make sure that we have the correct spelling. Our Head Judges can only report what is given to them on the Form 99 – so as a cook make sure that the correct spelling.

Sept. 6, Alice- 2nd Annual Oilfield Trash Blow Out Cook-off, 94 teams
BBQ’ers that keep a close eye on the IBCA calendar have probably heard of Alice. They are known for having a contest almost every month, and there’s at least one good reason, the Jim Wells County Fairgrounds. It’s a good place for a cookoff. Having been down there 3-4 times over the years, we were familiar with the venue. Plenty of water/electric hookups are available, and parking on grass, especially when temperatures are on the high side, is a plus.
Upon driving thru the gate, a portable building was used for registration, space assignment and tray pickup. You were then escorted to your site by a volunteer who also inspected meat.
This contest was unique. They put a twist on the 4 jackpots that were an additional $25 each. Margaritas & fajitas, we’re turned in Fri night. Beans and cooks choice turned in on Sat as were the 3 main IBCA meats.
Saturday brought bands, a Ranch Rodeo, vendors with all kinds of yummy tacos, fresh lemonade, funnel cakes and other goodies. Raffle tickets were sold for a buck each at a chance to win one of 5 big Yeti coolers.
At awards, they announced the IBCA Grand Champion, which only included the 3 meats, (and one thousand bucks!) then, the jackpot points were added on top of IBCA points to determine the winner of a Pitmaker Pit.
Congratulations to Danny Luera with 29 points for the IBCA Grand Champion, and 3 points in the jackpot category, for a total of 32 points to also win the Pitmaker. Reserve went to Smokin Lone Star, Arnie Segovia. Well done guys!

Sept 13, Cranfills Gap Septemberfest, 21 teams
You would never know Cranfills Gap was a small town with a population of 281,…at least not on this Saturday. Spectators from all around showed up Sat for the Septemberfest celebration.
After the cooks meeting Friday night, we headed just up the street to the Horny Toad Bar & Grill. The Horny Toad is a clean, fun, unique place. They offer appetizers, hamburgers, sandwiches, baskets, and of course, cold beer. A couple of sandwiches on the menu caught my eye~The Dan-wich…..Texas Toast, 2 slices of American cheese, 4 strips of bacon, grilled onions & jalapeños. THEN, just below the Dan-which, was the B$#%*wich. (yes, that was exactly the way it read on the menu but I think we all “get it”. lol). It had all of the above but add a hamburger patty! Although as tempting as the “B$#%*wich” was, ~ I opted for the Friday night special. Fajitas. That is hard to believe, I know! Lol
Saturday morning started off pretty cool and a jacket was called for, but by noon it was a good day to enjoy the cooler weather.
A car show with 30 plus old cars and a few rat rods, Arts & Crafts, hot dogs, kettle corn, local honey & jellies, locally handmade furniture, bounce houses for the kids and music for everyone under the big oak trees in the park.
There are a few RV spots with full hookups for $30 a night and plenty of parking on grass for others.
Thanks to Judy for head judging the event, without all our head judges, we wouldn’t be able to burn some meat every Saturday.
Check out “the Gap” next year. A trip to the Horny Toad Bar & Grill in this small town alone is worth the visit ;). At least that’s my opinion.
Sept 27, Hillsboro, Cotton Pickin’ Fair State Championship BBQ
With our hometown event at the end of Sept it gives us a chance to have friends and family come out and “experience” what we do every weekend. We have brisket, ribs, chicken, BBQ bologna, beans, potato salad, bread and cold beverages. We tell everybody we run into at Wal-Mart,….. “come down and eat”. Lol Five or six trips to the cookoff site later, we hope we are prepared. This year we had a good turnout, had some nice visits, and fed several of our hometown friends & family.
Lynn Shivers, Rachel Cox, Art Mann, Ben Cowan, Bob Crabtree, Natalie, Vickie and all those that helped put on the Cotton Pickin’ Fair, did a good job. The band Fri. night was great. The breakfast helped kick off the day Sat. and the cold beverages during the day kept us coming back for more! This year brought a good turn out of local teams. Hopefully, they got “hooked” and we will be seeing more of them at future contests. Thanks to tv’s BBQ Pitmaster, Johnny Trigg, for making time in his busy schedule to come compete and hang out with us. He’s always fun to be around.

October is usually a busy month for us when it comes to BBQ. The weather begins to cool down and some of our favorite contests are on the schedule. The Kansas City Royal, Traders Village, Benbrook, and this year we were lucky enough to have 8 qualifying wins to receive an automatic invite to The Jack Daniel’s Invitational in Lynchburg, TN.
Congratulations to Lynn Shivers who received the honor of being invited to judge at this years 26th Annual Jack Daniels BBQ.

TOP COOK POINTS Effective September 1 the points will count from September 1 through August 31st of each year – this is the IBCA fiscal year. 2014 Cook of the Year ends August 31st.
