2008 Crossroads Texas State Championship BBQ
Goliad, TX
With 46 teams competing this year was a record breaking
attendance for this event. Lana reports that the Goliad
County Go-Texan group planned a wonderful weekend for
the cooks and the community.
There was Team Roping, Team Penning, Ranch rodeo, Dance,
Texas Hold’em Tournament, Spaghetti supper Friday night,
BBQ Sandwiches for Saturday and plenty of cold
beverages.
Beside the BBQ, there was a Dutch Oven (meat & veggies)
competition on Friday and Pies from the Pits on
Saturday.
This was the South Texas BBQ Assn.’s added money event
paying out extra money to those members that placed in
the top 5 places.
On the Road with the Wade’s:
On August 22/23 we ventured off to Marina Village RV
Resort, Trinity, TX for the Marina Village Camp N Cook
event. This is a great location for a cook-off with
water and electric hook ups, lots of tall pine trees,
and plenty of shade. For the little ...and big
kids...bike riding, 2 big swimming pools, horseshoe
pits, and a nice view of the lake. As an added bonus 2
nights RV camping included in the entry fee. This first
year event had 13 teams—you might think about putting it
on the calendar for next year—It made a nice week-end
getaway.
Thanks to the head judge, Joy Lancaster. Congrats to
Eddie Cross, Jr, Pit Crew, Grand Champion and Grover
Hodges, Borderline Cookers, for Reserve.
Labor Day week-end we participated in the Harris County
Labor day event and were lucky to bring home Grand &
Reserve Champion out of 85 teams.
Sept 5/6 we travelled to Groves, TX for the Grillin’ in
Groves “Texas State Championship” BBQ which benefits the
Senior Citizens Center of Groves. 26 teams came to cook
at this event. We were parked on the grass in a nice
park complete with water and electricity. Good weather
for the cookoff with a little relief from the heat after
Gustav. Groves was fortunate to only get a little rain
from Gustav.
Congratulations to all that got called. Thanks to Don &
Darrell for their volunteer work in the judging area
Third Coast BBQ Assn. (TCBA)
added money event will be held Sept 19/20, 2008 at the
Haven’s Landing RV Park in Montgomery, TX. Membership
must be current as of 8-31-08 to qualify for the added
money.
Hurricane IKE
sure
played hectic to our cook-offs this year with all 3 that
were scheduled cancelled because of the threat of high
winds.
WATCH THE WEBPAGE FOR THE RESCHEDULED DATES.
W. E.
Core, W. E. Meat’s, passed away August 30. He had been
suffering for the past couple of years and now he is in a
better place with no pain. Our thoughts and prayers go out
to Joann and the family.
Please
keep all of those in the path of Hurricane Ike in your
thoughts and prayers as they recover from this devastating
storm. We have a large number of members in that area and we
hope that you didn't suffer much damage.
Please
keep Chris DeVries, Ruint BBQ, Karon Hill, Bear’s BBQ, and
others that are having medical problems in your thoughts and
prayers. BBQ has become an extended family to all of us -
