The
Irving Elks Lodge BBQ
this year had 47 teams participate without rain this
year. The road work made it difficult to get into
the area but Michael Christy and the BBQ Committee
did a good job of getting everyone into their
places.
Laura with the help of Jami Gregory and Sheila
Williams ran the judging and the ladies of the Elks
Lodge made sure that they had judges.
LaGarto Community Store benefiting the Halo Flight
was a big success this year with 50 teams
participating. Report has it that they raised
$20,000 for the Halo Flight.
Tim Lemon and Bob Baggerly were the Head Judge at
this event and Jim Benson did a good job of having
judges available.
Kaufman County JR Livestock Show BBQ
was down a few teams this year but the weather
wasn’t favorable for those that don’t have RV’s.
Saturday morning it was 26 degrees but the day
turned out to be great. Carole Ritter and Vanessa
Graham worked the judging area.
Bill Thornton does a great job with this event each
year—they served hamburgers on Friday night to the
cooks and doughnuts, orange juice and coffee on
Saturday morning.
This is a nice place to have an event and Bill would
like to make it grow. Mark this event on your
calendar for next year.
Stockdale Smokin’ Spring BBQ, Stockdale, TX
had 35 teams this year up 15 from last year. This
is an area that the events are growing and a lot of
new members are coming from the South Texas and Rio
Grande area.
Laverne reported that the
VFW 4692 BBQ, Bryan
was a good event with 29 teams participating. The
teams survived the cold temperatures and had a great
time.
St. Jude’s Bayou “LA State Championship” BBQ
moved to Gonzales, LA this year to the Lamar Dixon
Expo Center. This sight had full hook-ups for the
RV’s and there were 28 teams participating.
Lynn & Andy Hollerman were Head Judge at this event
with Bo Jackson assisting.
It is encouraging to see that there are more LA
teams becoming involved in the events — there were
only 6 teams from out of state at this event.
Usually 1/2 of the teams are from out of state.
West
Vol. Fire Dept. BBQ, West, TX—what
a pretty week-end with the exception of the wind.
Friday it was close to 90 and around 75 on Saturday.
All the teams were getting an early start on their
suntans this year with 114 teams participating.
Teams from all over Texas participated in this event
and one
team from Paola, KS ventured down to enjoy the warm
weather.
Cody Dragoo, George Nors and the Volunteer Fire
department do an outstanding job each year on this
event.
With the increase in prize money from $10,000 to
$15,000, thanks to Czech Stop, paying 15 places in
each
category the money was spread out to various
winners.
The Kid’s Que this year had 32 youngsters with 21 in
the age group 5—10 and 11 in the older group. Each
child got a trophy with larger trophies going to 1st
thru 3rd in each age group. If you have never seen
a Kid’s Que—check it out at the next event that has
one, they are fun to watch and this is our next
generation of cooks.

calendar for next year the 3rd week-end in March.
