19th Annual VFW 8787 “Chilly” Chili & BBQ Cook-off,
Austin, TX 2-9-08
If you missed this year’s event, you missed a good
one. There were 107 teams participating in BBQ with
a total of 115 teams participating in all of the
categories. This event has grown each year—Dee Dee
and the VFW BBQ Committee do an outstanding job each
year to make sure that the cooks are taken care of.
Friday night the cooks were served a Spaghetti dinner
and the famous Maxine Bloody Mary’s at the cooks
meeting Saturday morning. There was a silent
auction, (which raised close to $5,000) and 3
different raffles going on all day.
I was very proud of the group that helped in the
judging area that made everything run smoothly and
to be completed by 6:10 with 107 teams was great.
THANKS TO ALL that help. Thanks to Stacey & the BBQ
Committee for handing all of the jackpot items.

Reserve Champ, Howard, VFW Commander, Joanna, and
Joanne Blanchard, Grand Champion.
Congratulations to all that got their name called.
Mark your calendar as a MUST DO event for next year.
Winners can be viewed on the events page.

Attention Cookers:
We have found large Styrofoam trays for the
chicken halves at large events of 60+. They
seem to be a little deeper but not quite as wide
as the metal trays were, therefore, if you need
to cut the backbone out of your chicken to make
it fit better then do so.
The lid must close on the container or it will
be considered a marked tray.
We are not dictating the size of chicken that
you cook but as stated above, the lid must close |

There were 3 other events since the last
newsletter besides “Chilly” Chili & BBQ.
San Patricio Country A & H BBQ, Sinton, TX—this
was a first year event and there were 32 teams
participating to raise money for the
scholarships.
“Might Snow” BBQ, Mt. Pleasant, but it
didn’t; had 31 teams participate in the cold
rain. Jan reported that everyone had a good
time and that Tommy Joe Chandler had scored a
perfect score on ribs on the final table.
Congratulations—you don’t find that very often.
Also, the Victoria JC Jr. Livestock Show BBQ,
Victoria, had 37 teams this year. Jen
stated that everyone had a good time even with
the rains that came in Sat.
Congratulations to all that got their names
called at these events. |

ATTENTION: Due to the rising cost of printing
and postage, we would like to know if any
members would rather get the IBCA Newsletter
from our website www.ibcabbq.org under Smokin’
Log rather than snail mail. We realize that
everyone doesn’t has a computer but this would
be a BIG savings for the organization.

TIDBITS
I would like to say THANK YOU to those of you who
have responded to read your newsletter on the
internet. I will send you an email stating that the
new newsletter has been posted under the “Smokin’
Log on the IBCA Forum.
If you know someone that has been thinking about
joining the IBCA now is a good time for them to
join. We have a “Membership Special” from
now through June 1, 2008.
PAY $55.00 for general membership and the membership
will be extended thru 8-31-09.
Additional
PITS are $15.00.
Thanks for supporting the IBCA as we continue to
grow in our 19th year.
As you will note there are approx. 90 events on the
schedule as of now. This is a record for February
and we get calls almost daily asking about adding
new events.
Of course, with the new events, that will call for
additional Head Judges—if you think that you might
be interested, show up at an event and work in the
judging area. The OJT is the best thing that you
can do to find out if this is what you would really
like to do.
I enjoy being Head Judge because of the people that
I meet and also because I know that I am giving the
COOKS the fairest judging that can happen on that
given day.

If anyone would like
to write an article on any IBCA event that you attend, we
are always looking for things to go into the newsletter.
This
is your newsletter and we would like to supply information
that you enjoy. |
