Smokin' Log October 2007

Next IBCA Meeting will be:

October 3, 2007

North Main BBQ          406 N Main, Euless, TX

7:00 p.m.

4th Annual Pit Rasslers Classic, Naples, TX   A BIG SUCCESS with 72 teams

Congratulations to John Arnold, Brad & Mary Caraway, and their BBQ committee for putting on a great event this year.  The additional $10,000 plus 90% of the entry fee had teams from all over Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma competing for the big payouts and a chance of being named the Texas State Champion.

The committee served all the cooks a fish dinner on Friday night and breakfast on Saturday morning.  Judging started at 10 am with beans and Judy had all the cooks seated and ready to go.  We had chicken, pork spare ribs, pulled pork and brisket categories and always had plenty of judges.  Brad and his crew made sure that those that were parked a long way from the judging area had a golf cart or 4-wheeler there to pick them up at turn-in times.

The judging went very smooth this year with plenty of help.  Jan did a great job of being the Head Judge for this event with the help of Cindy Weatherford, Mena, AR., Andy & Lynn Hollerman, Lafayette, LA., Vanessa Graham, Cindy, Peggy Bethell, and Lynn.  We want to thank Peggy for making sandwiches for our lunch.

Congratulations to Waldo Strein, Lost Gonzo, on winning Grand Champion and Barbie Strein, Lost Gonzo, Too, being named Reserve.  Also congratulations to Joanne Blanchard for winning the big raffle drawing.

Mark LABOR DAY Week-end 2008 and plan to attend this event.  They are planning to make it bigger and better.

46 Teams Participate in Hill County Go-Texan BBQ, Hillsboro, TX

An increase of 8 teams this year over last year at the event—it was warm but at least we had a breeze blowing through the judging area.  Tammy Christian and the Go-Texan Committee do a great job every year making sure that everything runs smooth.  This is another event that always has their judges lined up and ready to be seated as soon as needed.

Thanks to Peggy, Paula, Leah, and Kennie for helping in the judging area and all of the others that were helping serve the drinks and make sure that the tables were clean.

Congratulations to Ivan LeLux, Varmit Cookin’, on his first Grand Champion , Marty Marak, Duelin’ Stacks, Reserve, and Michelle Wade, Hill County Go-Texan winner to represent Hill County at the Houston Rodeo event in February, 2008.

The ballots were counted and the results are in:

                 Jeff Shivers, Executive Director

Laverne Akin, Board of Director at Large

Don Wright, Board of Director at Large

Thanks to all that voted — only 175 ballots were returned.  Thanks to Waldo Strein, Dickie Spier, and David Higginbotham for helping with the counting of the ballots.

Blackland BBQ Assn. (BBBQA) has caps for sell for $10.00—this money will be added to the funds that will be paid back to BBBQA members at the Caldwell FFA event in June 2008.  Anyone interested in obtaining one contact Dick Spier.

Pineywoods BBQ Assn. (PWBA) had their added money event at the Naples Pit Rasslers Classic and this year paid back 5 places in four different categories.  They are planning to send out letters to all of their members asking for Nominations for PIT BOSS and IBCA Representative.   Jim Worsham stated that the votes would be counted at the Titas County Public Safety Benefit, Mt Pleasant, Oct 19-20.  Also, think about which you as a PWBA member would like to see the added  money in 2008.

Southwest Arkansas BBQ Assn. (SWABA) has announced the date of their event next year to be May 9/10, 2008.  This event is an Arkansas State Championship.

STBA

South Texas BBQ Assn. (STBA) had their added money event at Goliad, TX at the Crossroads Championship this past week-end with a record number of cooks for this event with 31 teams competing.  This event has steadily grown over the past few years and  I understand it is a great event and a Texas State Championship.

TCBA

Third Coast BBQ Assn. (TCBA) continues to grow and pick up other events in their area.  Steve Williams is recovering from rotator cup surgery and has been unable to cook for a while.  We hope that he is on the mend.

Grillin’ in Groves, Groves, TX had 31 teams participate this year after receiving their Texas State Championship proclamation on Tuesday before the event.  T-Wayne Abshire, T-Wayne’s Cajun Cookin’, from  St. Amant, LA was named Grand Champion
