Guardian Angel helps team win Grand Champion
at the 3rd Annual K-Town BBQ & Sausage Party, Koscuisko, TX.
Back Forty Cooking Team
Family & Friends

Once again, the K-Town group put on an “Awesome Cook-off”.
Emotional —My Lord……..As you have probably already heard our
Grand Champions were the “Back 40 Cookers”… with Brian
Blacketer (deceased as of last month after his battle with
cancer) listed as Head Cook. Brian’s family was there to
support the team and a scholarship fund was set up for the
kids and at last count there was $5,100.00 raised. The
response was absolutely wonderful, so many donated their
winnings back to the fund or matched the K-town hall and
sports complex donations.
I addressed the group at one time during the announcements
and told them that BBQ is “FAMILY”...that is how so many of
us got started and lasted so long. We pull together, we
care and work to help one another.
There were 26 entries in the Kid’s Division and I think I
had the most fun getting to accept the entries...they were
all so proud. Our champion was a young lady from New
Zealand, here visiting family..she will have a lot to show
and tell on her return home. Thanks to Kevin Jackson,
Forrest Browdy, and Eddie Winn for sponsoring the Kid’s
Cook-off.
50 entries in the “Made with Sausage” category on Friday
night. Saturday was a full day with Bloody Mary division,
Jackpot Beans and the IBCA categories.
I want to Thank my head judges, Michelle & Dawn, and the
K-Town boys and their wonderful ladies for all their
assistance during the cook-off. I had so many cooks come up
and compliment the cook-off, which is always nice to hear.
My hat is off to the boys and girls from K-Town for an
Awesome/Memorable Cook-off.
The Old Lady Lana.

With high gas prices, ya got to make the most of it —-
Since it was the 4th of July holiday week-end, we decided to
hit the road (I know some of you are not really surprised).
The fact that 2 cook-offs in one week-end was possible,
Edinburg on Friday, July 4th, and Refugio on Saturday, July
5th, we decided to take advantage of the situation and try
our luck. After all, Refugio was on the way home, well
north anyway, but just about everything in TX is north of
Edinburg.
First stop, Edinburg Municipal Park. Despite the high winds
Thursday afternoon, we got set up with the Smokin’ Triggers
for neighbors. At least we didn’t have to battle Trish in
beans, only because they didn’t offer a jackpot bean
category. The Breadman came by to visit with some of his
freshly baked bread with butter and honey. He stated that
for some reason when his bread is good, his que is too.
Friday morning brought a hard blowing rain—by the time the
cook’s meeting rolled around at 8 a.m., we were all soaked—I
guess roughing it in the pick up and ez up has its
drawbacks.
Congrats to LeRoy Ludemann, The Breadman, Grand Champion and
Joel Contreras, Los Tios Y Los Primos, Reserve, who by the
way made the trek to Refugio to cook with team mates on Sat.
as well as Tim Lemon, after running the judging at Edinburg.
After the awards, we made a quick stop at Flying J to get
“freshened up” then hit the road, destination—Refugio 150
miles north
While driving to Refugio, we got to see quite a few
impressive firework shows in the distance. Arriving at
11:30 most of the teams had turned in after a long day of
ancillary categories. We did manage to find some neighbors
up and asked them to look at our raw, unseasoned meat before
getting started.
After first turn in of Chicken, I stopped and watched a
“frog jump”. Some people will go to all lengths to try and
make a big green bullfrog jump. Some beat the ground, threw
wet rags down beside or behind them or just told them to
jump. Pretty funny stuff. The award for the frog jumping
the longest distance went to a group of Refugio High School
Cheerleaders.
By Rib turn-in they had advanced to an egg toss—8 to 10
teams participated in this event. There was a Horseshoe
tournament, a DJ for musical entertainment, and all kinds of
cool refreshments
The awards were timed just right to witness the jalapeño
eating contest with 6 participants. John Kelly ate 39
jalapenos in a 5 minute period to be named the winner.
Michael Burns and his BBQ Committee did a bang up job
putting this event together.
Thanks to Bob Baggerly & his judging crew for volunteering
their time and making the judging run smoothly.
Congrats to Ronnie Wade, Blazen BBQ, GC and Rudy Rodriguez,
Back Off Cookers, Reserve.
The IBCA Rio Grande Valley Pit is really growing. They have
cooks showing lots of interest, coming out and joining in
the fun. As an added bonus, many of their cook-offs are
Texas State Championships.
Til next time—good luck on the smoking’ trail—Michelle Wade.

Texans Love Lafayette,
LA.
By Jan Canterbury
Last week-end Don, Hunter and I travelled to Lafayette, LA
to experience first hand the southern hospitality that many
of our friends had told us about. We loaded in our new RV
and headed east. The American Red Cross promoted this event
and there were 2 representatives in our cook site when we
arrived to make sure we had everything that we needed.
Friday night they hosted an open competition that a “Cajun”
theme. I’m note sure how many teams participated but I
heard there wasn’t a loser in the bunch. Check the IBCA
website for an official list of the winners.
Included with our entry fee was a 25 lb. of ice and 2
t-shirts. Karen Williams, our contact person from the Red
Cross, even let us chose what sizes we wanted. Thanks a
lot, Karen. Andrew was helpful with the electricity and
location of the turn-in and Jay was always ready with a
friendly answer to any questions. Angie Pruett was the head
judge and had help from the Shivers’ and lots of other
volunteers. A big thank you from all of the cookers for
making sure the event ran fairly and smoothly. After a few
long walks (for those of us who didn’t have the use of a
golf cart), Don Canterbury was named Grand Champion! Honey,
you are on a roll. Toni Maynard and Doug Ritter tied for
Reserve, but Doug came out ahead in brisket and that is the
tie breaker. Congratulations to my favorite guys whose
names start with D!!! And to everyone else who had their
name called. If you haven’t cooked this event, it is worth
the trip. It is a LA. State Championship, also. That’s it
for now, so good luck and have fun wherever your pit parked
next.
